Chapter 9

The Bowels of Tyleme

Ten days after they first met, Anaxantis and Sirnar rode into Tyleme, side by side. A small guard carried the dragon flags and the plain, undecorated orangey-yellow standards of the Heavenly Line.

Anaxantis wore, as usual, his gray uniform of a captain of the Amirathan militia and his red commander’s mantle. Sirnar had wanted to follow suit and wear something plain and inconspicuous, but Lomauch had pointed out the people wouldn’t recognize him without the elaborate apparel of a Divine Prince, let alone one who had come to take over the reins of government. Sirnar had agreed.

He smiled, clearly embarrassed, at Anaxantis when he joined the warlord at the head of the combined armies for the last miles to Tyleme, dressed in his rich robes.

“You look fine, Sirnar. And impressive. It’s exactly what the Tylemean people expect.”

Sirnar grinned self-consciously while servants helped him onto his horse, but he wished he didn’t feel so ridiculously overdressed next to the warlord who didn’t need the paraphernalia of power to make an impression. The prince-warlord didn’t need them because he was the real thing, Sirnar thought.
